(31 Oct 2001) STORYLINE: US jets continued bombing raids on Taliban frontline positions north of Kabul on Wednesday, sending up huge plumes of black smoke over areas struck by the bombs. Eyewitnesses said it was some of the heaviest bombing of the frontline yet, and that at least 11 bombs had fallen on Wednesday morning. An Associated Press reporter at the frontline saw six bombs fall. The Alliance and the Taliban are facing off north of Kabul, and the opposition has urged the United States to increase its attacks in order to break the resistance of the Islamic militia, which would allow the anti-Taliban forces to advance on the capital. There has been some speculation that the attacks would subside after the current upsurge to honor the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that starts in mid-November. But the commander of the US operation in Afghanistan, General Tommy Franks, remained noncommittal when asked about the issue on Tuesday during a visit to Uzbekistan. A fighter belonging to the northern alliance, Ghulam Rabbani, said Ramadan should not be an obstacle, pointing out that even the fundamentalist Taliban have not honoured it in past fighting with the alliance.
