This film, a rare collaboration between the renowned F. W. Murnau (4 Devils, City Girl) and Fatty Arbuckle of Keystone Cops fame, has been recently rediscovered after the excavation of a decommissioned swimming pool in the Yukon Territory unearthed a trove of well-preserved reels from the era of the silver screen. According to contemporaneous descriptions, the film was a two-reeler that exploited an unusual formal structure and framing narrative—perhaps building on similar ideas in Buster Keaton's "Sherlock Jr," Yakov Protazanov's "Aelita: Queen of Mars," or even Richard Strauss's opera "Ariadne auf Naxos"—whereby the audience is led to believe we are watching the premiere of a serious concert work, only for this to be revealed as a deranged fantasy in the second half: the clarinetist, obstructing the revival of an Ionesco play, is grabbed at the neck by a shepherd's crook and dragged off-stage, flailing wildly. When he attempts to return to the stage and resume the enactment of his delusion, the keystone cops would have been called to the scene and the story would have devolved into the typical melée. Unfortunately, only several partial copies of the first reel survived, and we here present to you our faithful restoration of this hitherto unseen gem from two silent era masters.
