In our new online community, we recently got this asked this question… “How do you fish fast moving, turbulent water?” 🤔 In a river, water at the surface is always moving faster than water at the bottom. This is because the river bed causes friction, slowing the water down. So what may look like fast moving, un-fishable water on top… might actually be home to hungry trout. The key is getting your flies down into the strike zone. In this case, it’s right next to the bottom. And there are 3 ways I like to do that: 1. Use slimmer profile flies. The skinnier/slimmer flies without any loose fibers or legs (like a Zebra Midge or Perdigon) usually sink faster than buggy flies (like a Hare’s Ear or Prince Nymph). 2. Use heavier flies or split shot. This simply adds more weight and causes it to sink faster. 3. Use smaller diameter tippet. So if you are using 4x, step down to 5 or 6x. It’s surprising, but this small reduction is tippet size can cut through the water and cause your flies to sink faster. So the next time you see faster water, give these 3 options a shot and put some fish in the net! #venturesflyco #livereellife #flyfishing #beginnerflyfishing #howtoflyfish
