This is a Stanley 81 cabinet scraper, probably from before 1920. this model was manufactured between 1909 and 1942, but the text on the screw suggests it was made before 1920, when the Stanley Rule & Level company merged with Stanley Works. it originally came with a rosewood base, but it was probably replaced with a simple stained pine block. the chrome plating is in bad shape, so I decided to soak the entire thing in vinegar to remove rust and then wire wheel it. surface rust was then sanded off, and a new base was cut from beech wood. I didn't have the original blade, so I used a card scraper. the original blade is best sharpened to around 45 degrees, but the scraper is thin so I sharpened it to 90 degrees and rolled a burr. in the video you can see the blade doesn't perform very well. there's some chatter which I later tried to mitigate by adding a piece of wood behind the blade. I'll re-sharpen the blade when I have some time.. the birds in the video are a pair of Indian Myna, which is one of the most invasive species in the world. they made their home on my window, extremely smart and protective of their nest. it took me more than a month to shoot all the bird footage :) it was a nice surprise to see the eggs and chicks hatching! I hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! --------------- music: Daily Beetle Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...
