Evils of Russia and China in Central Asia with Dr. Adeeb Khalid

Today, we have noted historian Sri Adeeb Khalid on our show. Today, we will discuss Adeeb Khalid’s book, “Central Asia: A New History from the Imperial Conquests to the Present” Central Asia is often seen as a remote and inaccessible land on the peripheries of modern history. Encompassing Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and the Xinjiang province of China, it in fact stands at the crossroads of world events. Adeeb Khalid provides the first comprehensive history of Central Asia from the mid-eighteenth century to today, shedding light on the historical forces that have shaped the region under imperial and Communist rule. The essential history of one of the most diverse and culturally vibrant regions on the planet, this panoramic book reveals how Central Asia has been profoundly shaped by the forces of modernity, from colonialism and social revolution to nationalism, state-led modernization, and social engineering. Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor of Asian Studies and History and Director of Middle East Studies at Carleton College. His books include Making Uzbekistan and Islam after Communism. ▬ Contents of this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 - Highlights 01:07 - Intro 03:04 - So what made you write a history book from a Central Asian perspective? 06:02 - What challenges did you face while writing the book? 10:26 - In your book, you express displeasure over the usage of the term Silk Road and the theorization that somehow the Silk Road underpinned Central Asia's economy and made its civilization viable. Why is the viewpoint problematic? 13:43 - A common perception about the Central Asian countries is them being historically isolated from the rest of the world. However, that's not correct as you describe in your book. It had influence from Islam, Mongols, the Qing dynasty, and the Tsardom of Russia. Whose cultural influence do we see the most in present-day Central Asia? 16:26 - How has the Treaty of Nerchinsk defined the history of the region? 17:56 - All of the 5 Central Asian countries have a close relationship with both Russia and China. Do the two countries act to counterbalance each other in the region? 21:24 - Sinicization of Xinjiang is a reality; China has turned the entire province into prison and is trying to dissect the people from their rich heritage. What designs does it have in Xinjiang? 29:12 - China also claims the Pamir region of Tajikistan which has 30-35% landmass of Tajikistan. Do they really have a claim to it? 32:47 - How much of a role did national identity play in the breakup of Soviet Russia? 40:01 - The five countries have a shared history and it is difficult to build a national identity when your history lies in the geographical boundaries of other nation-states. How do these five countries manage it? 45:52 - The five central Asian countries run as the mini Soviet Union 47:33 - The end of history - Francis Fukuyama 50:13 - What projects are you currently working on? 53:18 - Adeeb's to The Eastern Report 54:08 - Endnote Support The Eastern Report ►   / easternreport   Please don't forget to Like, Share & Subscribe! ► Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheEasternR... ► Facebook:   / theeasternreport   ► Twitter:   / _easternreport   ► Instagram:   / theeasternreport   ► YouTube:    / theeasternreport   ► Website: https://theeasternreport.com/ #CentralAsia #USSR #China #Xinjiang #TheEasternReport #WorldHistory #Uzbekistan #Tajikistan #Turkmenistan #Kyrgyzstan #Kazakhstan #Xinjiang
