Is Auroville the Chariot of Jagannath? 4.30 - 5.30 PM (IST) Rama Narayana Bio: I came to Auroville in 2001 with my family to serve its purpose. I served as a teacher in Transition School, manager of Farm Fresh, executive in SAIIER, as a BCC-member and as an Entry Board member. I have been serving as an executive of the Auroville Residents’ Assembly Service since April 2023. I am happy in whatever way the Great Energy uses me to realise Her Dream. Abstract: This presentation explores the provocative question “Is Auroville the Chariot of Jagannath?” through the lens of Sri Aurobindo’s seminal article “The Chariot of Jagannath.” In that essay, Sri Aurobindo uses the powerful image of Lord Jagannath’s chariot—immense, sacred, and unstoppable—to symbolise a collective movement driven by faith and idealism often beyond the understanding of those who participate in it. Drawing on this symbolism, the presentation reflects on Auroville as a living experiment of human unity—an undertaking vast in vision, complex in execution, and propelled by a higher ideal rather than individual will. Like the chariot, Auroville gathers diverse forces, cultures, and aspirations, moving forward despite internal contradictions, resistance, and apparent disorder. Auroville Convivial: Live Talks is a week-long international gathering during Auroville Week (21–28 February 2026). It is conceived as an invitation to step into a shared, live space to speak about and around Auroville. Together, we seek to reopen dialogue on how this ongoing experiment engages with the wounds of the world, as well as its own lived successes, setbacks, and unfolding possibilities to reflect the prismatic nature of Auroville.
