Classical Concert 03.10.2025 - Fraykeh Cultural Festival 2025 Violin Sonata, Op. 14 Wiaam Haddad (b. 1997) Maya Maalouf, Violin Wiaam Haddad, Piano Originally conceived as a cello sonata in December 2022, this three-movement work was later adapted for violin between September 2024 and March 2025, in close collaboration with violinist Maya Maalouf. The first movement, Andante-Vivace, opens with a short piano introduction, leading into a lyrical theme presented by the violin. A second theme, introduced by the piano and echoed by the violin, emerges after a series of modulations. The development section explores both themes in contrapuntal dialogue, culminating in a recapitulation that intensifies the first theme with violin double stops and contrapuntal piano writing. The movement closes with a coda that revisits material from the introduction. The second movement, Tema con variazione, is built on a 16-bar aria-like theme first stated by the violin over a chorale-style piano accompaniment. The theme undergoes seven variations that explore contrasting keys, textures, and rhythmic patterns. The final movement, Rondo con fuga, features a recurring main theme built from a D–E–F–G motif that links it thematically to the earlier movements. Structured around five episodic digressions, the movement is written predominantly in 7/8 meter, creating a distict rhythmic drive. The fourth episode’s fugue uses a jazz motif known as “the lick” as its subject. The interplay of rhythmic patterns, including references to Ottoman-era rhythmic cycles, gives the movement a distinctive energy before it concludes with a final restatement of the theme.
