Israeli restrictions worsening Gaza’s storm-hit shelters: Analysis

Shaina Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council told Al Jazeera that Gaza’s recent storms have been “horrific”, flooding thousands of tents and destroying the few belongings displaced families have left. She said shortages of shelter materials persist because Israel is blocking NRC and other NGOs from bringing in aid stored in Egypt, despite their valid registrations. Low explained that low-lying displacement sites need drainage channels and heavy machinery, but such equipment is also being denied entry. She noted that the shelter cluster, which NRC co-leads, coordinates with the UN and NGOs to distribute shelter supplies equitably. However, limited space, severe destruction, unexploded ordnance and aid restrictions all hamper the response. Low stressed that proper tents and materials must meet humanitarian standards, pointing to tents collapsing under rain. She urged immediate approval for machinery, demining teams and essential shelter items to enter Gaza.
