The semi-finals of the African University Student Challenge, hosted by EduBridge Academy, brought together two outstanding teams from the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana to debate one of Africa’s most pressing issues: Nigeria’s ongoing brain drain. The event opened with Bolu from EduBridge welcoming participants and introducing the judges — Praise Ihansekhien, a finance and public relations professional, and Ayodeji Ajilore, an experienced investment management expert. They outlined the judging criteria, which included clarity, research depth, teamwork, delivery, and Q&A performance. The University of Lagos team kicked off the competition with a data-driven exploration of whether brain drain is harming Nigeria’s future or shaping it from abroad. Their argument highlighted both the damaging loss of talent and economic opportunities, alongside the benefits of diaspora remittances and global exposure. They proposed actionable solutions such as competitive remuneration for critical skills professionals, diaspora tax incentives, improved institutional funding, and expanded training capacity in health and engineering fields. The University of Ghana team presented the “Japa syndrome” perspective, focusing on the push-and-pull factors influencing skilled migration. Their analysis emphasised the collapse of local working conditions, the strain on healthcare capacity, and the cost of training professionals who eventually leave. They also outlined a “brain circulation” model based on remote engagement, improved local conditions, and structured diaspora investment. During the Q&A sessions, judges delivered rigorous feedback on data sourcing, analytical depth, and presentation structure, urging both teams to better differentiate root causes from symptoms. After a closely contested deliberation, the University of Lagos was announced the winner by a narrow margin. The event concluded with encouragement for participants to leverage the opportunity for mentorship and professional growth
