The rotator cuff is a group of muscles in the shoulder that allow a wide range of movement in the shoulder while maintaining the stability of the glenohumeral joint. The rotator cuff muscles are divided into 4 muscles, Subscapularis, Infraspinatus, Supraspinatus, Teres minor. In addition, rotator cuff muscles help in the mobility of the shoulder joint by helping abduction, medial rotation, and lateral rotation. Here is the function of rotator cuffs: 1- Subscapularis: Medial (internal) rotation of the shoulder 2-Supraspinatus: Abduction of the arm (Bringing the arm to the body from abducted position). Supraspinatus helps for the initial 0 to 15 degrees of shoulder abduction motion and the deltoid muscle abducts the arm beyond 15 degrees 3- Infraspinatus: Lateral (external) rotation of the shoulder 4- Teres Minor: Lateral (external) rotation of the shoulder In rotator cuff injury your age plays a significant role. The rotator cuff Injuries ranged from 9.7% in those 20 years and younger increasing to 62% in patients 80 years and older and in many cases, there are no symptoms present.
