A panel with student artists Rachelle Campos-Suarez, Madeline Mendoza, Estrella Martinez, and Samantha Quervalu Moderated by Michelle Cruz, project fellow February 2, 2026 2:30 - 3:30 PM (1 hr 15 mins) 127 Walker St, New York, NY 10013 In this panel, you will hear from student artists who participated in creating portraits that represent the stories and lived experiences of undocumented people in the United States. The artist, Dr. Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana, and her students who collaborated on mounting the mural will reflect on their experiences of exploring U.S. immigration issues through the hands-on, embodied process of painting and installing the mural, and through sustained presence in the community—meeting, listening to, and engaging local residents. We’ll talk today about artistic process, ethical responsibility, emotional impact, and what it means to create art rooted in migration stories in today’s political climate. Rachelle Campos-Suarez is an undergraduate student at Baruch College majoring in Digital Communications with a minor in Latino Studies. Her academic focus and creative work center on art as a tool to uplift, document, and amplify the lived experiences and voices of her community. She is passionate about using storytelling, culture, and media to create meaningful representation and social impact. Madeline Mendoza is from the Dominican Republic and a senior at Baruch College. She has been passionate about politics from a young age. Estrella Martinez is a junior at Baruch College majoring in Digital Communications with a minor in Latino Studies. She’s a first-generation Mexican American college student who loves opportunities to be creative, community-focused work, and conversations about culture, identity, and media. On campus, she’s involved in marketing and cultural organizations and is excited to share her experiences with other students. Samantha Quervalu is a senior at Baruch college currently studying Black and Latino studies minoring in psychology with a passion for mental health and advocacy.
