Armenia Showcases Indian Weapons As It Shifts Away From Russian Defence Systems

Armenia has publicly showcased a range of modern weapons acquired from India, highlighting a major shift in its defence strategy away from traditional Russian systems. The Armenian Ministry of Defense released footage displaying artillery, rocket systems, and air defence platforms aimed at strengthening the country’s mobility, firepower, and battlefield protection. Among the key systems is India’s Akash-1S medium-range air defence missile, capable of intercepting aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles up to 30 kilometres away. Armenia also revealed the Pinaka multiple launch rocket system, which significantly expands long-range strike capabilities, along with advanced 155 mm artillery platforms including the Trajan towed howitzer and the mobile MArG 155 self-propelled gun. The move follows Armenia’s growing dissatisfaction with Russia’s support during the Second Karabakh War, prompting Yerevan to seek new defence partners. Since 2022, India has supplied a wide range of military equipment, from missiles and radars to counter-drone systems and heavy artillery. With the establishment of military attaché offices in both New Delhi and Yerevan, India has emerged as one of Armenia’s leading arms suppliers.
