Product Review Athearn Genesis HO GP38-2 SP - One of SP's last locomotives! EMD's GP38-2 diesel locomotives were built starting in the early 1970s. The GP38-2 was an improved version of the earlier GP38. It had a four-axle B-B configuration and produced 2000 horsepower. These general purpose locomotives were used by railroads throughout North America. Many GP38-2 locomotives are still in service today. In the mid-1990s, Southern Pacific acquired a number of rebuilt GP38-2 locomotives from HELM Leasing. The model in this review, SP 4864, represents a unit delivered to Southern Pacific in June, 1996, just a few months before the UP merger. Because the unit came so late, instead of painting it in SP’s normal scarlet and gray, HELM left it in their maroon and blue scheme, just adding “SP” initials on the sides. This model train runs well and is loaded with detail. As usual, after the unboxing, Dan evaluates the model’s packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards. If you're a fan of the Southern Pacific, Electro-Motive diesels, or just like trains in general, be sure to check out this review! #train #modeltrains #scalemodels #hoscale #athearn #southernpacific
