Who is Peter Farrell? Peter Farrell was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1981. The son of professional musicians, he began studying music at a very young age, showing an early interest in the flute and violin. His mother introduced him to both jazz and classical music, exposing him to the works of George Benson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Miles Davis, Debussy, Ravel, Bach, Dori Caymmi, Toninho Horta, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and many others. Like many teenagers, Peter developed a love for rock ’n’ roll. At the age of 11, he asked his mother to take him to a guitar teacher. This marked the beginning of his journey into rock and blues. One year later, he enrolled in a music conservatory, where he studied classical guitar, music theory, and jazz. During this time, Peter fell in love with George Benson’s music and dedicated himself to studying Benson’s techniques and improvisational approach, setting it as his goal to master his idol’s style as a guitarist. A pivotal moment in Peter Farrell’s career came when he began studying Brazilian music, piano, and advanced classical harmony, which provided a fresh perspective on both improvisation and music as a whole. Alongside his studies, he gave his first music lessons and discovered his unique ability to teach and inspire others. Teaching soon became one of his passions. In his early 20s, one of the most defining events of Peter’s life took place when a friend introduced him to his idol and mentor, George Benson. The connection was instant. Benson was astounded by Peter’s talent and his ability to decode many of Benson’s closely guarded musical secrets, which no one else had managed to interpret as effectively. A few years later, driven by his deep love for jazz improvisation, Peter decided to follow George Benson around the world, ultimately convincing him to become his mentor and private teacher. Over more than 20 years of studying privately with Benson, Peter created in partnership with him what became known as the George Benson Method, a jazz guitar improvisation methodology that achieved global success. However, after years of carrying Benson’s torch, Peter decided it was time to forge his own musical path. Building on his broad experience and diverse influences, Peter developed a new revolutionary methodology for improvisation. This system combined Benson’s principles with everything Peter had learned throughout his musical journey, including classical harmony, Brazilian music, rock, blues, and insights from other jazz greats. Today, Peter Farrell is an educator, arranger, and producer. He runs a successful online jazz guitar school and teaches his unique methodology alongside his partner, Filipe Faria. Peter has recorded and performed with a host of renowned artists, including Brian McKnight, Jane Monheit, Antonio Faraó, Harold Mabern, Russell Ferrante, Didier Lockwood, Adam Rogers, Eumir Deodato, Filo Machado, and Cesar Camargo Mariano, among others.
