Here, Ukrainian forces in the northern Kupiansk sector are deploying their latest reinforcements, combining mobility and firepower to reshape the battlefield. With new deliveries of Bucephalus vehicles, they are tightening the noose around a key Russian strongpoint and setting the stage for a decisive turning point in the fighting along the Oskil River. Ukraine's goal is to eliminate the Russian bridgehead west of the Oskil River and push Russian forces back from Kupiansk to neutralize the threat to the city. Kupiansk is a key logistical hub and a vital crossing point supporting Ukraine's eastern bridgehead since the 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive. After two years of failed frontal assaults, Russia is now using its position west of the Oskil River to flank Kupiansk and cut off Ukrainian forces in the east. To counter this, Ukraine has launched a large-scale encirclement operation, attacking the Russians from multiple directions to tighten the noose around their flanking attempt and eliminate the threat. To support this operation, the Ukrainian High Command reinforced the 14th Mechanized Brigade, veterans of the Kharkiv counteroffensive, with BTR-4E Bucephalus armored personnel carriers, among Ukraine's best domestically produced armored vehicles. With a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour and amphibious capabilities, the BTR-4E is ideal for fighting in the difficult terrain along the Oskil River bank. It enables rapid advances, maneuverability in swamps and muddy terrain, and safe river crossings, ensuring that Ukrainian forces can outmaneuver and overwhelm Russian positions. The BTR-4E is armed with a 30-millimeter autocannon, allowing it to suppress Russian infantry while simultaneously transporting up to eight fully equipped soldiers. Its armor protects against small arms fire, grenades, and even rocket-propelled grenades, making it ideal for assault operations in this sector. As the ice melted on the river, Russian forces on the west bank could only transport their infantry across the river in small rubber boats, which meant they lacked access to tanks and heavy firepower. They were limited to light equipment and ammunition and could not deploy heavier anti-tank weapons, leaving them defenseless against Ukrainian mechanized attacks. Due to these difficulties, the Russians were unable to resist the impending Ukrainian attack, setting the stage for a Ukrainian mechanized assault spearheaded by Bucephalus armored vehicles. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the Russians only have about 500 troops along the entire 20-kilometer front line across the river, or only 25 troops per kilometer of the front line. This allowed the Ukrainian Bucephalus vehicles to drive through the weakest and most vulnerable points of the Russian defenses and drop their infantry units. Ukrainian fighters then used these gaps to bypass the main Russian defenses, move through cover, and then attack and ultimately eliminate the Russians from behind. This allowed the Ukrainian forces to recapture several key positions near the settlements of Fyholivka and Zapadne, reducing the Russians to a handful of tree lines while they continued their attacks. In addition, the Ukrainians also deployed special forces directly north of Kupiansk to support the counterattacks, clearing enemy hideouts with grenades and rifle fire, and taking several prisoners of war. This tightened the noose around the Russian bridgehead, as the Russians lost key positions for gathering forces and threatened the weak foundation of the Russian offensive efforts. ...
