Renwick Smallpox Hospital Ruins - Roosevelt Island, NYC

A walk around the abandoned Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island in NYC. April 2022. The hospital was designed by the famous architect James Renwick. (Renwick's most famous building is NYC's Fifth Avenue St. Patrick's Cathedral.) The hospital opened in 1856 and closed in the 1950s. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a New York City Landmark in 1976. It is the only ruin designated as a New York City landmark. Roosevelt Island was once named Blackwell's Island. In 1921 it was renamed Welfare Island. In 1973, Welfare Island was renamed Roosevelt Island after former President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
