Held on February 13, 2026, this is the second session in the four-part Illinois Community-Based Birth Justice Strategic Plan Launch Series presented by Health & Medicine Policy Research Group and the Black Midwifery Collective. Led by Nora Kropp and Chastity Mays, this session focuses on the lived realities, challenges, and opportunities facing Illinois’s birth justice and maternal health workforce. Drawing from two studies, presentations will examine compensation and benefits, stress and burnout, workforce retention, policy advocacy, and the structural conditions shaping community-based perinatal work—particularly in high maternal risk counties and Southern Illinois—while highlighting workforce-identified needs and priorities such as funding, collaboration, culturally responsive care, and stronger integration of community-based roles. This session is particularly relevant for community-based birth workers and maternal health professionals, as well as advocates, funders, and policymakers focused on workforce sustainability. https://www.hmprg.org https://blackmidwiferycollective.org https://birthjusticeillinois.org
