The LAZ-695 was the first bus produced at the Lviv Bus Factory, in Ukraine. The 695 series was introduced in 1956, and was produced until 2006 in numerous variations. The 695N series was introduced in 1969, but the mass production began only in 1976. This series got a new front with higher windshield, and smaller instruments on the dashboard. The early models of the 695N series had rectangular headlights and fake aluminum radiator grills. In the mid-80s the aluminum grills were removed and the headlights were changed to rounded ones. Until 1991 these buses had a big hatch on the front. This was designed for military operations, for loading and unloading wounded people on a stretcher. The passenger doors were too narrow for this. In 1985 a modified version of the 695N was introduced. These models were able to run on compressed natural gas. The methane containing cylinders were placed on the roof. In the 90s the LAZ-695NG series became widespread, especially in Ukraine because of the fuel crisis. Many buses from the 695N series were also modified to run on gas.
