Gambling games just got banned in India. The Lok Sabha has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 which bans real-money gaming across India. This bill also promotes e-sports and casual games that don’t involve real money. Commenting on this development, Vishal Gondal, one of the founders of nCORE Games, the studio behind FAU-G: Domination, said, “I welcome the Govt’s decision to prohibit Real Money Gaming & establish a strong regulatory framework. Too many young lives were being lost to addiction & debt. This decisive step safeguards our youth while unlocking the future of Indian gaming, driven by original IP, creativity & Make in India games.” Another founder, Sumit Batheja, one of the founders of Ginger Games, shared his thoughts, saying, “We applaud this decision as it allows us to focus on the ongoing concerns as a business like monetization, retention, and most importantly, building great IP for India and the world, rather than having to explain to our audiences what we are to begin with.” RMG made up about 85% of India’s overall gaming industry revenue in FY24, or $3.2B out of $3.7B. It's worth noting that India hasn’t had the decades of gaming industry evolution that other countries have had. There is no Indian Playstation, Xbox, Steam, or Nintendo, nor is there a AAA industry. For many Indians, gaming is synonymous with RMG. The Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports, All India Gaming Federation, and E-Gaming Federation wrote a letter, warning that a blanket ban could result in the loss of more than 200,000 jobs and the closure of over 400 companies. #onlinegamingbill #fantasysportsban #onlinegamblingindia
