Periosteum is a connective tissue layer that covers the outer surfaces of the bones except articular surfaces and sites of attachment of tendons. it is made up of two layers (a) An outer layer which is a network of densely packed collagen fibers with blood vessels. (b) An inner layer which is more cellular and comprises of fibroblast-like cells Histophysiologically, the periosteum provides medium through which muscle tendons and ligaments are attached to bones. Because blood vessels passes from the periosteum to bones, it performs nutritive functions.
