This week: Eight insightful lectures from philosopher, theologian, and intellectual heavyweight Truman G. Madsen. These lectures shed gospel light on age-old questions such as: What makes us who we are? What is man's relationship with God? What is the nature of the Universe? Am I free to choose? What is God's role in man's suffering? We can count the seeds in an apple, but can we count the apples in a seed? The fullness of the glory of the Father is a "fullness and a continuation of the seeds" This is the significance of the promise made to Abraham. This is lecture #1: Cosmos & Creation Lecture 1: Creation & Cosmos @1:30 The most disastrous marriage that ever occurred was the marriage of Greek Philosophy and Hebrew Christianity. There has never been a divorce. @9:15 The world’s rejection of the book of Abraham @9:40 Eternal Nature of Element. Chaotic Matter and its inherent glory @11:00 Pure principles of element are yours forever. @11:10 The Earth and the World are not synonymous. We are participants with the Earth in transformation. Two Bible verses are incorrectly translated and lose this meaning. @12:25 The Earth’s origin and progression @12:50 Jews believe the Earth had to be veiled from sources or intense light. @13:10 Science has discovered stars a TRILLION times brighter than ours. Isaiah said that God dwells in everlasting burnings. Fire purifies & glorifies. @14:35 The book of Abraham talks about the creation not as days, but as “times” @15:00 IN the day you eat of the fruit you shall surely die. What does this mean? @15:50 Greek ideas of time & space vs Christian ideas vs Modern Revelation @18:10 How long is an eternity? @19:45 Density of black hole @20:30 Life in the universe? Do elements contain life? Do they possess consciousness? @21:58 Inhabitants of other worlds are saved by same truths and powers as we. @24:20 Tremendous knowledge learned EONs ago manifested as faith Adam having dominion of the Earth means he is already in the likeness of God @25:14 Heraclitis on reailty of change, but how then is God unchanging? @26:40 Abraham & Kolob @29:20 “I AM that I AM” Hebrew reading can mean, “I WILL Become what I WILL Become” @35:20 John Taylor mocked in 1870s for suggesting our cosmos began with a “tremendous explosion” This is widely accepted today. @37:20 If the universe is infinite, can it possess a center? Will we be able then to travel faster (much faster) than 186k miles / sec? @40:20 Can any father claim his title without a mother? Do universal principles only apply to the creation or to the creator also? Produced in 1998 (eleven years before his death), these lectures were his “summa philosophica,” a mixture of his “last lecture” and a summation of his understanding of Christian philosophy. From a commenter online, "There is only one mistake. Madsen tells a joke, that Augustine told people that before He created the world, God was preparing a hell for people who asked such questions. Not so. In “Confessions” Book XI, chapter XII, Augustine wrote, “How, then, shall I respond to him who asks, “What was God doing before he made heaven and earth?” I do not answer, as a certain one is reported to have done facetiously (shrugging off the force of the question). 'He was preparing hell,' he said, 'for those who pry too deep.' It is one thing to see the answer; it is another to laugh at the questioner--and for myself I do not answer these things thus. More willingly would I have answered, “I do not know what I do not know,” than cause one who asked a deep question to be ridiculed--and by such tactics gain praise for a worthless answer. ” Please check out the Sunday School Playlist for videos that discuss items of spiritual significance.
