This has really set the web ablaze with the EV community and caused quite a bit of backlash from folks who had pre-ordered the Launch Edition. This video will provide some context about the recent changes and what they should or could indicate regarding Aptera in the future—not to mention the EV space in general. In a recent video announcement, Aptera finally gave some more solid details on its plan for producing the ultra-efficient three-wheeled autocycles that have been promised for years. But getting to production means the company had to make some changes, including ditching hub motors for the first vehicles built. The front wheels will be driven by a Vitesco Technologies EMR3 drive unit. It’s a single assembly with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, gear reducer, and inverter all built-in mounted in the nose of the vehicle and power transmitted to the wheels by shatfts. Consequently, aptera will be deviating from the all-wheel drive configuration to the front-wheel drive setup that was being planned for the launch edition, a transition that has generated a mixed reaction from customers. The move to front wheel drive was not altogether unexpected for those who have been watching Aptera. The company said that all the launch edition will be switched to front wheel drive; customers who want the all-wheel drive version will be advised on which is the next step to take once the all-wheel drive version gets available. Not that aptera has scrapped off the version; this is, it claims, there isn't any rationale for an all-wheel drive version in the launch edition at this point.
