A suprapubic catheter insertion involves placing a tube directly into the bladder through a small incision in the lower abdomen, bypassing the urethra, to drain urine. • Purpose: Suprapubic catheters are used to drain urine when a person cannot urinate on their own or when urethral catheterization is not possible or desirable. • Procedure: • A small incision is made in the lower abdomen, just above the pubic bone. • A tube (catheter) is inserted through the incision and into the bladder. • The catheter is held in place by a balloon inside the bladder that is inflated with sterile water. • Urine drains through the catheter into a drainage bag. • Reasons for needing a suprapubic catheter: • Urinary incontinence (leakage) • Urinary retention (inability to urinate) • Surgery that made a catheter necessary • Other health problems • Injury to the urethra • Benefits: • Can be more comfortable than urethral catheters • Easier to change than urethral catheters • Can be almost any size • Anesthesia: The procedure can be done with local, epidural, or general anesthesia.
