Author Joy Berry visits PS 321 in Park Slope Brooklyn, NY to discuss Bullying with classes of elementary school students. -------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO HANDLE A BULLY - By Joy Berry The word "bullying" used to conjure up visions of tough guys beating up on little guys. And while that still happens, it's not the only kind of bullying that goes on these days. Bullying changed drastically with the advent of "mean girls" armed with rapier-like tongues and cruel intentions to fuel them. And things only got worse when cyber-bullying made it possible to inflict injury without getting physically involved. So now the stakes are higher and it's more important then ever to teach children how to deal with bullying. Of course the first step is to provide a clear understanding of bullying, and here's some information that can help: • Bullying is any aggressive action toward another person that is intended to taunt, harass, cause discomfort, or cause physical or emotional harm. This can include everything from stalking to injuring someone. • Bullies use their size, strength, popularity, or malicious cunning to torment others. • Some bullies act alone while some bullies get other people to participate in the bullying. • Bullying requires at least two participants—a bully and a target. A target is a bully's victim. Once children understand what they might be up against, it's time to teach them how to deal with a bully. In the past the focus has been on standing up to bullies. But unfortunately this strategy does not always produce the desired results. In fact, in some situations it only exacerbates the situation. A better alternative can be found in these simple, yet effective, six-steps. Step 1 - Treat Bullies with Kindness: Treating bullies with kindness can sometimes avert their bullying because bullies often find it more difficult to be mean to a kind person. Step 2 - Stay Away from Bullies: If treating bullies with kindness does not work, the second way to deal with bullies is to avoid them. Simply stay away from them. Step 3 - Confront Bullies: If bullies can't be avoided, the third way to deal with them is to confront them. This includes looking bullies in the eyes and telling them to stop the bullying. Step 4 - Ignore Bullies: If confronting bullies does not work, the fourth way to deal with bullies is to ignore them. Step 5 - Walk Away from Bullies: If ignoring bullies does not work, the fifth way to deal with bullies is to walk or run away from them. Step 6 - Get Help: If it is impossible to get away from bullies, the sixth way to deal with bullies is to get help. This includes asking for help from parents, teachers, and other adults. (It is essential to keep seeking help until the situation is completely resolved.) It's true. Life seems to be more complicated for kids nowadays. But since the beginning of time, kids have had the ability to adjust to their situations and do whatever is necessary to survive. Children do not have to become victims of bullying. Instead, by following the six steps listed above, children can move through childhood secure in the knowledge that they never need to be afraid of a bully.
