Montana is finally going to experience one of its most impactful winter weather systems of the season, arriving Monday night and continuing through Wednesday. This storm will bring two cold fronts and a strong area of low pressure tracking in from the South Pacific. As this system moves just south of Montana toward the Dakotas, it will wrap moisture and energy across the state. The biggest concern with this storm won’t just be snowfall — it will be the combination of snow squalls and very strong wind. Wind gusts across much of Montana could reach 45 to 50 mph, especially Tuesday morning. These strong winds combined with snow squalls could rapidly reduce visibility and create dangerous travel conditions, particularly during the morning commute between 7 AM and 9 AM. Snow squalls are fast-moving bands of intense snowfall that can quickly deteriorate road conditions with little warning. Here’s what to expect: • Wind gusts statewide up to 45–50 mph • Snow squalls possible Tuesday morning, especially during commute hours • Mountains in western Montana: 6 to 8 inches likely • Lower elevations: generally a few inches • Northwestern Montana: greatest overall impact • Central and eastern Montana: lighter snow lingering into Wednesday Even areas with lighter snowfall could experience hazardous travel due to strong wind and rapidly changing visibility. This system will gradually exit into the Midwest by Wednesday. Stay tuned for updates as we continue tracking this impactful Montana winter storm.
