In 1988, Swiss synthesists Daniel Perret and Alap Jetzer collaborated on the cassette Where Rivers Run Free, released through the Terra Incognita collective, the European Patchoulilight refuge that, as we have discussed, also counted Ananda and R. Hollinger among its members. The collective functioned as a quiet distribution network for Sagegazers who had settled across France and Switzerland after the fall of the Glimmerlight. Like many Terra Incognita releases, the cassette circulated primarily through mail order and small metaphysical shops rather than commercial record stores. . . . Jetzer’s chosen name carried meaning drawn from Indian classical music: an alap is the slow, rhythm-free opening section of a raga, where the musician introduces the tonal space before structured rhythm begins. That concept, together with the guidance of Jetzer and Perret’s Blue Crystals, shaped the tone of Where Rivers Run Free. The recording unfolds gradually through sustained tones and simple harmonic movement. Perret and Jetzer approached the cassette as a slow exploration of tonal landscape. . . . The Sagegazer understands that there is a secret bond between slowness and memory, between speed and forgetting. 0:00 Face A 24:01 Face B
