Mafia: The Old Country (2025) (PC) (Hangar 13)

If you keep doing something long enough, chances are it's going to fall out of favor with the general public at some point. But if you keep on doing it even after that, eventually it will come back in style! At any rate, that seems to be the design philosophy behind Hangar 13's unapologetically old-fashioned new action game Mafia: The Old Country. This is a singleplayer third-person stealth/shooter hybrid with linear progression and a heavy emphasis on plot and non-interactive dialogue. A few years ago, that would have sounded like a really outdated and financially dangerous approach to non-indie video game production. But perhaps the deluge of open worlds and online services in recent years has created a strong enough counter-culture to welcome a game like The Old Country with open arms? Well, I for one have definitely become a bit nostalgic about the X360/PS3 era of linear singleplayer action games (even though, ironically, this channel is old enough for there to be plenty of online evidence of me railing against that very trend back in the day). At the very least, Hangar 13's rose-tinted tale of loyalty, ambition and revenge in the Sicilian heartlands feels like a return to form for a curious B-tier franchise which seems to defy gravity merely by continuing to exist.
