“Every moment is a fresh beginning.” —T.S. Eliot After checking with the knowledgeable staff at the Boulia Visitor Information Centre + chatting with other friendly campers/travellers at the Boulia Caravan Park, we planned a 4-day adventure that would see us travel 800kms of Australia’s Longest Shortcut from Boulia to Alice Springs. We prepared ourselves (and the caravan) to traverse the diversity of the country from red sand and clay to bulldust and gravel. DAY 1: The first leg of our journey was from Boulia to Tobermorey Station (just over the NT border) – about 250kms. Their campground featured grassy, shaded camping sites and large communal fire pit. They also had a quirky 'Meathouse' Bar with rustic features – an Austin Truck (BBQ + firepit) and windmill shade structures! DAY 2: We were up early and ready to tackle 215kms of the Plenty Highway to reach our next destination. Of course, we had to stop and marvel at the largest termite mound we have ever seen!!! We safely arrived at Jervois Station and set up in their large open area campground amongst beautiful gum trees, with plenty of cows wandering around. DAY 3: Another day on the Plenty, and a total of 210kms to travel. The ranges looked spectacular, and it was a relief to finally hit the bitumen again. The Gemtree Caravan Park combined bush camping with gem fossicking and is also home to the heritage registered Old Mt Riddock Homestead Museum. DAY 4: The final 140km journey to Alice Springs! We were happy to be on the wide-open Stuart Highway and saw several interesting points of interest: Tropic of Capricorn Marker & Northern Territory Highest Point Marker. We were delighted to arrive in Alice and we were looking forward to exploring the town. Time to hit the road!
