Perhaps there is no more emblematic symbol from the Bebop era of the ravages of mental health problems than Bud Powell. More about that later. And that is because it is better to praise Powell’s great accomplishments and celebrate his skill and his legacy. Most would say that if one were to pick the most powerful and formative voice of this music, it would have to be Powell (despite the fact that there are lots of tremendous pianists also working in the idiom). He had the busiest right hand of the era, which hovered over the keyboard like an ever moving, scuttling crab on a beach. Yet somehow, some took him to task for not using his left hand more. Francis Paudras told me the following: When Bud met the seemingly super human pianist Art Tatum, he also too mentioned that Bud didn’t use the left hand very much. So, Powell played the entire next set with his left hand ONLY. Tatum loved this, and they immediately became the best of friends. Powell was in part the inspiration for the famous film ROUND MIDNIGHT, but that was not a strict history of Bud. Later in his life, and after electro shock treatment, Powell did not speak a lot. He had already revolutionized jazz piano, and that was miracle enough. But the fact was that when he played, he was still a magnificent pianist, despite his challenges. Yet another miracle.
