Should I add a preservative to the Blue Spirulina Cleansing Soap Bars? Answer: Very complicated Reason: Most believe that soap has a high pH level do to the saponification process, which does not allow for the growth of microorganisms like mold, bacteria, fungus, etc. They believe it is self preserving and most preservatives are not effective at a high pH level. However, the soap is constantly being introduced to water. The may pose a problem. Especially if it is hard water.
