Place Information: La Perla received its name from the small structure that used to look like a pearl from far in the sea. It used to be a slaughter house area, and an important place for a lot of businesses. It is located just outside the fortified city of Old San Juan, owned and built by the spanish. The fortified city is now considered a World Heritage Site and known as San Juan National Historic Site, under the National Park Service. Source: Myself, summer volunteer
