The Exchange District

The Exchange District is a National Historic Site (defined in 1997) located in the middle of downtown Winnipeg. It is comprised of twenty block with roughly 150 heritage buildings (warehouses, financial institutions, and early 'terracotta' skyscrapers). Around the turn of the 20th century (1980-1918) Winnipeg was one of the fastest growing cities in Canada - becoming the third largest in Canada by 1911. Because of changes in development and shifting distribution routes the district wasn't changed or expanded after the initial growth spurt - leaving this area as one of the most historically intact early 20th century spaces. I stopped in front of Natural Cycle - one of the many wonderful bike stores found in Winnipeg. Visit the Exchange and explore the many shops, historic buildings, and sights.
