Radical acceptance is one of the most powerful, most challenging, and most misunderstood DBT skills. Learning to radically accept the reality in front of you, whether you like it or agree with it or not, is often the missing step when you and your loved one are stuck. Non-acceptance clouds our ability to problem solve and truly understand what you and your loved one need. Learning to radically accept and navigate the feelings that come along with it is often the first step in making important changes in your life. Come deepen your knowledge of what it really means to accept, what gets in the way and how acceptance is the first stage of changing behaviours. Gillian C. Galen, PsyD, is a senior child and adolescent psychologist specializing in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). She is the director of training for the 3East continuum at McLean Hospital, Boston, an array of programs for teens that uses DBT to target self-endangering behaviors and symptoms of borderline personality disorder. Dr. Galen has extensive experience diagnosing and treating adolescents and young adults who struggle with emotion dysregulation, anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-endangering behaviors, such as self-injury and suicidal behaviors. She is the co-author of the books “Mindfulness for Borderline Personality Disorder: Relieve Your Suffering Using the Core Skill of Dialectical Behavior Therapy”, “Coping With BPD: DBT and CBT Skills to Soothe the Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder”, and “DBT for Dummies.” We are a registered Canadian charity.
