I moved to Fort Nelson in the north of British Columbia to work for the world champions in dog mushing – The Streeper Kennels. Fort Nelson is a town of 3300 inhabitants, and it lays at the Alaska Highway and it is not the typical destination during a work&travel stay in Canada. However, I saw a post that the Streeper Kennels searching for a dog handler to take care of the dogs until the end of winter. I love dogs and if I would live in a bigger place, I would already have my own dog. To be honest I didn’t even know that there are these kinds of jobs. It is an absolute dream, and I am very happy that I got accepted. The biggest challenge was to come from Vancouver to Fort Nelson. A lot of connections are canceled due to CoVid and besides that Fort Nelson is not a popular tourist spot. The only way to go to Fort Nelson for a reasonable price was by bus. It took my five days and three different busses. However this way I could finally see a little bit of Canada. The bus connection was very reliable and I enjoyed my times at the mandatory stops. Now I am in Fort Nelson and work as a dog handler. Here we have real winter conditions with heaps of snow and temperatures down to -35°C. It is also a good spot to see the aurora or also known as northern lights. One day they were pretty strong here. To witness this is super special and I have no doubt that it was the best decision to leave Vancouver to move here. -- Just a short introduction: my name is Manuel.
