Twenty miles out from the Marloes Peninsula—well beyond the shelter of Ramsey Island and the bird-loud skerries of Grassholm—lies a sprinkling of reef and rock called The Smalls. The sea here is all muscle: Atlantic swell meets the complicated hydraulics of St George’s Channel; storms press in from the west with the force of a freight train.
