In the prime of his life, Fee Waybill of the Tubes, one of rock’s wildest frontmen was lured into a seedy parlor in the underbelly of San Francisco’s notorious red light district. The rocker was captivated by a young exotic dancer who slinked around inside an enclosed booth with hardly any clothes on. … Falling into a scam, Fee kept shelving out dollar bills, trying to engage in a conversation with the dancer, but she ignored him until he finally wised up and realized he was being a sucker! Fee Waybill eventually paid enough money for the woman to converse with him, and he asked her if she would like to be a dancer with his band. She refused to answer his question, and his session abruptly ended. They say ‘Curiosity killed the cat,’ but in this story…curiosity birthed the smash hit She's a Beauty. Today we have the story of an 80s classic that most know by heart from a truly unique band that doesn’t get its due credit in our latest entry into #1 in our hearts… songs that absolutely should’ve been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 but for perplexing reasons came up just short so we right the wrong. This is one of these classic 80s singalong hits that everyone knows by heart but many middle-of-the-road music fans don’t know who sings it. I’m talking about She’s Beauty be the Tubes…..Known for his outlandish costume changes and character portrayals on stage, Fee Waybill, the frontman for the Tubes, was a spectacle in his own right. One of his main characters, Quay Lewd (a play on Quaalude), was a drugged-out British rock star wearing two-foot-tall platform shoes, a feather boa, and a long blonde wig. Standing at 6 foot 4 in bare feet, Fee's Quay Lewd costume made him tower over 8 feet tall. Tubes' concerts were filled with explosions, smoke, chainsaws, and a daredevil aerial artist. The band often spent more on their elaborate stage antics than they earned from performing. One day, Fee was tooling around the Red Light section of San Francisco’s Missing District when he was transfixed on a sign outside of a seedy parlor called the Tenderloin that read “Pay a dollar- Talk to a Naked Girl.” Well, it just so happens Curiosity got the best of Fee, so he went inside. The experience inspired the conception of the biggest hit for The Tubes…1983’s “She’s a Beauty.” Fee attended Arizona State University with plans to study oceanography, but he discovered a passion for acting and decided to pursue it instead. Eventually, he dropped out of college and, while hanging out in Arizona's Verde Valley, met his future bandmates Roger Steen and Prairie Prince. The guys eventually moved to San Francisco. To stand out from the other acts in the Golden City music scene, Fee brought to life a variety of memorable characters during the Tubes live shows.
