Safa means "Dialogue" This song, from a funeral ceremony, is sung in front of the entrance to the family mausoleum. The dead person is wished a good journey into the world of his ancestors, in order that he might in the future become active for the good of the clan. The "dialogue" starts with a musical introduction comprising accordion, fiddle, marovany and, principally, the valiha. This is followed by the invocation of the ancestors, normally with no musical accompaniment. Randafison here assumes the role of the mpihifika, or medium. The blessing ceremony and the passing over advice then precede a musical conclusion, closing the ceremony. The instrumental line-up includes the rare Malagasy bamboo drum. Randafison here plays an unusual version, in which the valiha is heard continuously. He is normally known for his renditions of love songs, children's songs and folk music, and this is his first interpretation of a mystic work. "Honour be yours, O father. (1) My head turns to you, calling. The tracks of your road I shall blow. We have come, because we expect everything of you: Everything that is good for us. So that illness does not return. So that there is no hunger. So that the family prosper and flourish. "Yeees", he says. Oh! Oh!... "Yeees", he says. "Take care, that you do not expire!" he says. (2) "I'm coming toward you", he says. The word "Ray" (father) instead hints at the word "iray" (= One), and represents the common descent of all those assembled. And more: Since descent in Madagascar is, traditionally, matriarchal, father ("Ray") should also be regarded as deriving from the unity of descent ("iray"). The address to the father to make contact with the entire family also derives from a Malagasy tradition which does not, however, entail any hegemony for the male contact. The appeal in the ceremonial hymn is therefore directed to all those ancestors buried in the family mausoleum. (2) The breath blown moves along these tracks and reaches the ancestors, who is then able to comply with: From the north, the south, east and west: You ancestors up above, look down on us and you below: look up to us, too.
