I will continue practicing out of the country, in my country while we can and when we can't, we will do it illegally because this is our life, our passion. I repeat it, it's our way of life and I will die being a bullfighter." 5. Students practicing in La Morenita plaza 6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Gonzalo Saez de Santamaria, Hacienda Owner where Lidia bulls are bred: "The day they tell me that bullfighting is forbidden, all the cattle will go to the slaughterhouse. All of it. Why am I going to continue to keep fighting bulls if I can't fight them? I will dedicate myself to another business, which is meat cattle or sell the land to industrialize it." 9. Various of Lidia' fighting bull in Hacienda Mondoñedo ASSOCIATED PRESS Bogota - 2 July 2024 10. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Andrea Padilla, Congresswoman: “I don't believe, and it's more than a belief, it's a question of numbers, that a bullfighter or a novillero (apprentice bullfighter) or a banderillero (bullfighter's assistant) can make a living from bullfighting. First because Colombia is not a country that has bullfights all year round. So I find it hard to believe or improbable that a bullfighter, a banderillero or a novillero, can live on five or six bullfights a year." ASSOCIATED PRESS Choachí, Colombia - 22 June 2024 11. Various ariels of bullfighting practice ++MUTE++ STORYLINE: For Sebastián Caqueza, who became a professional bullfighter five years ago, his profession will not end as a law banning bullfighting in Colombia comes into force. “I will die a bullfighter,” said Caqueza on a recent day in the La Morenita de Choachí bullring, some 53 kilometers from the capital. On Monday Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed a law banning bullfighting. Countries allowing bullfighting include Spain, France, Portugal, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Mexico with the last two nations prohibiting bullfighting in some states and cities. Polls across Colombia indicate the bullfighting has lost popularity. Caqueza practices in a school run by a retired matador from Spain. Trainees practice with a bull made of cardboard, with real horns and supported by a metal cart. When the proposal to ban bullfighting passed in May there was an immediate effect as children between the ages of eight and 14, stopped coming to practice. Banning bullfighting has been in President Gustavo Petro's sights since he became mayor of Bogotá in 2012, when he revoked the lease of La Santamaría bullring, and closed during his administration. Uncertainty also afflicts the cattle ranches dedicated to raising fighting bulls. Twenty-two kilometers from Bogotá, in Mosquera, Gonzalo Sáez de Santamaría proudly shows the Mondoñedo ranch the first fighting bull ranch in the country that his great-grandfather Ignacio founded in 1923. “If the fighting bull does not go to the bullring, it would go to a slaughterhouse,” he said.
