We often begin our songwriting journey by learning to write in major keys, yet once we unlock the minor sounds, a whole new world of harmonic possibility opens up! In this video I break down the functions and relationships of chords in a RELATIVE MINOR system (Aeolian Mode). We start by examining a simple method for establishing our new tonal centre and quickly move into some more complex territory, including substitutions, borrowed notes, 4-note voicings and diminished chords. I also focus on some subtle variations that can have a huge impact on your songwriting process and ultimately give you more options to work with. Ben is also the Founder and Head Producer of SILAMOR STUDIOS, a boutique studio specialising in Composition for Film, TV and Interactive Media. He writes extensively across various instrumental and lyric-based genres and has been commissioned for major projects by Adobe, Cathay Pacific and Audible. He also currently releases original songs under the name SILAMOR. Ben is passionate about education and has taught song and lyric writing as well as film composition for JMC Academy and the Australian Institute of Music.
