We continue sailing east along the remote northern coastline of Papua New Guinea, leaving the Hermit Islands behind and heading toward Manus Island. With no official anchorage, we pick a spot off the map to stop and check over the engine — which hasn’t exactly been reliable since sitting idle in Indonesia for the past year. Within minutes of arriving, we’re greeted by locals… and told we’re only the third boat to stop here in the last 30 years. From navigating reefs to sailing along the edge of powerful squalls, this part of the journey is a reminder of just how remote — and unpredictable — these waters can be.
