I’m Peter E. Watts. I’m a long-time educator and small business owner. If you’re like me, it’s become abundantly clear that our democracy is being threatened and our constitutional rights and freedoms are being undermined. When the President of the United States sits down with world dictators in the Oval Office while praising and flattering them, our democracy is threatened and our rights and freedoms are undermined. When the press, or news media, is called “the enemy of the people" by this same president of the United States, our democracy is threatened and our rights and freedoms are undermined. When Americans and legal residents (including those with green cards) are arrested for non-violent public protest or writing op-ed's criticizing government policy, our democracy is threatened and our rights and freedoms are undermined. When immigrants and naturalized American citizens are scapegoated, targeted and attacked by federal enforcement, our democracy is threatened and our rights and freedoms are undermined. When the President of the United States unilaterally (without the approval of Congress which is what the US Constitution requires) creates a new Department of the Executive Branch which has reportedly accessed highly sensitive data on the American public, eliminated thousands of federal workforce jobs (that you and I depend on), cut spending that was already approved by Congress (another violation of the US Constitution), cut life-saving programs and funding in the US and oversees (which will affect our international relationships for generations) and has done all of this without meaningful transparency or accountability, our democracy is threatened and our rights and freedoms are undermined. When worker rights, voting rights and our freedom of speech is being infringed upon and silenced by a president, rogue federal law enforcement, state legislatures and governors, our democracy is threatened and our rights and freedoms are undermined. This is a short list.
