Video & Modifications by Ted Doskaris: Mitigating the LGB R5 turnout for operational use with other makes (brands) of locos & rolling stock. The LGB booklet which came in the box with the R5 turnout states on page 6 that LGB turnouts are designed for the wheels on LGB locomotives and cars. So If you use other makes of locomotives and/or cars, they may derail when running through LGB turnouts. To make the LGB R5 turnout usable for operating other brand products (Aristo-Craft, USA Trains, AML, etc.) there are 3 areas of concern: (1) So a wheel flange won't hit it, the blunt end point rails need to be filed at their sides so they transition to a sharp edge. (2) To preclude wheel ride-up - usually with a loco, the molded-in plastic guard rails are best removed and replaced with longer metal guard rails with smoothed transitional end "ramps" and spaced closer to their adjacent stock rail. (3) The wheel flange bearing plastic frog open throat area top inboard sides can be beveled to better tolerate locos with power pickup shoes (skates) that may be slightly off level (skates could drop down in the frog throat and get stuck). Also, the plastic "lip/s" at the ends of the frog that flair into the sides of the metal rails may protrude a bit too much - in which case they can be filed so a wheel flange won't hit it.
