Lonmin share price: Ben Magara

South Africa is fretting about the continued survival of platinum miner Lonmin and the future of its 35 thousand employees. After heavy losses in its financial statements and on the market this year, On Tuesday Lonmin's shares plunged by 33 percent as investors rejected it's plans to raise money. Basically Lonmin needs cash to survive because it has debts and it's not sustainable at the current price of platinum which is about 900 dollars an ounce. That's about half of what platinum was selling for five years ago. Lonmin asked shareholder to buy new shares at a massive discount of 94 percent in a rights offer. But even at that price - or perhaps because of that price - they've gone running. On Wednesday the share price rose by half a percent - but that's hardly material when it's down by around 95 percent for the year.
