Tim addresses themes of governability in a climate of grassroots revolt and a splintering of party loyalties. This is against a backdrop of economic stagnation where poor economic outcomes underpin much political discontent. Tim Colebatch was Economics Editor of The Age between 1993 and 2013, and before that, Washington correspondent, editorial writer and environment writer. His book, a biography of Victoria's reformist Premier of the 1970's, Dick Hamer, was published in 2014 and he is presently researching a second book. He is a frequent contributor to the online current affairs and culture journal Inside Story (www.insidestory.org.au) and has been a generous speaker at previous Fabian events. Tim has been an incisive commentator on Australian and international politics, and is especially interested in themes of governability and its intersection with economics. He has recently been visiting Europe and has been thinking about what can make economies successful in a post manufacturing age. Tim's talk will be on 'Government in a slow-growth, fast changing world.'
