Presentation of the policy paper "Girls Just Wanna Have Voice: Strengthening Women's Leadership in Ukrainian Media Industry" Participants: – Mariya Frey, Member of the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (Suspilne) Supervisory Board; – Oksana Davydenko, Deputy Director for Legal Affairs at Starlight Media; – Yelyzaveta Nechyporuk, Head of Social Media, The Kyiv Independent; – Ruslana Brianska, Executive Director of Hromadske Radio. Key topics: – Challenges faced by women in Ukrainian news media; – Guidelines and practice checklist for overcoming barriers in the media production; – Practical steps for creating equal and safe media industries in Ukraine. Why is this important? The full-scale war has worsened existing inequalities, increasing workloads, undermining safety, and exposing women journalists to higher levels of online abuse. A 2025 joint study by Women in Media NGO and UNESCO found that 81 percent of Ukrainian female journalists experienced gender-based online violence, ranging from misogynistic harassment and sexist hate speech to disinformation and coordinated defamation campaigns. Researchers warn that this sustained pressure creates a chilling effect, discouraging women from participating fully in public life and limiting their professional visibility and career prospects in the media industry.
