Beatrice's reign was notable for her controversial love story with Klaus von Amsberg and the revolutions that took place during her time as queen. Beatrice was born in 1938, continuing the tradition of female rulers in the Netherlands. Her birth came after a difficult pregnancy due to an accident involving her father. Beatrice's baptism took place in 1938, but her family had to flee the Netherlands during World War II and did not return until 1945. In the 1960s, Beatrice surprised her people with news of her engagement to Klaus von Amsberg, a German diplomat with ties to German Nazism.
