Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) surgery involves the dissection of the main sympathetic trunk of the sympathetic nervous system. By disrupting neural messages from the sympathetic nervous system, the body’s response to changes in the environment is altered. This procedure is used to treat excessive sweating in areas such as the underarms, face and palms. ETS is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon makes 2-3 small incisions under each arm. A tiny camera is inserted into the patient’s chest, enabling the surgeon to perform the surgery endoscopically. The patient’s lung on one side is deflated in order to facilitate the surgeon’s ability to work in the area. The surgeon then locates the nerves responsible for sweating and will permanently destroy them. The deflated lung is inflated prior to the surgeon closing the surgical incisions. The same process is repeated on the other side of the body. As with any surgery, there are potential risks including infection, bruising, swelling, loss of sensation in the underarms, and scarring from the incisions As with any surgery, there are potential risks including infection, bruising, swelling, loss of sensation in the underarms, and scarring from the incisions. ETS also carries the potential risk of causing compensatory sweating, excessive sweating in other areas of the body. This surgery is currently covered under OHIP.
