Despite Vladimir Putin’s claims that his army has been advancing in almost all directions of frontline in recent months, the number of Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries in Russia has sharply increased. Experts believe that 19 Ukrainian drone attacks have been launched on Russian territory in the first three months of 2025. By comparison, by late 2024, there were only 25 such attacks, the Telegraph reports. By striking Russian oil refineries, Kyiv seeks to slow down the Russian army advance across Ukraine. In addition, Kyiv wants to force Russians to understand that the war is actually much closer to them than it seems, which is why Putin wants a temporary ceasefire only on energy facilities, according to the publication. The continued bombing of Russian oil refineries by Ukrainian drones has caused growing discontent with Putin’s regime among Russians. According to Energy Aspects analyst Livia Gallarati, after a series of drone attacks on oil refineries, the production of petroleum products in Russia has noticeably decreased. While some refineries were producing 5.6 million barrels of oil per day, after the drone attacks, these figures dropped to as low as 5.1 million. Analyst Emilim Ferris believes the attacks on these refineries not only affect oil production, but also draw public attention to the topic of war in Russia. Such strikes point to Russians that Kyiv can strike at any point the Russian Federation and that distance is no obstacle for such strikes. Ukraine also benefits from a 30-day ceasefire involving energy infrastructure, however during this period, Kyiv will not be able to strike the oil refineries and hurt Putin’s economy. Attacks deep into Russian territory also reflect another objective of Ukraine: The desire to “bring the war home” to Putin and the Russian people – who hear little of the battlefield hardship hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
