University student denies Quran desecration charges

A university student accused of stepping on a copy of the Quran claimed trial at the Sessions Court here on two charges. S. Vikneswaran, 21, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Sessions Court judge Harmi Thamri Mohamad. He is accused of defiling an object held sacred to Muslims by stepping on the Quran with the intention of insulting Islam. The charge is framed under Section 295 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. He also pleaded not guilty to a second charge of transmitting offensive communication with intent to annoy others via Threads. Both offences were allegedly committed at about 1.30pm on Feb 22 in Kuantan. The second charge, under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, carries a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, as well as an additional RM5,000 fine for each day the offence continues. Judge Harmi Thamri set bail at RM10,000 for both charges with one surety and fixed April 8 for mention.
