Fistula is a tract with two openings, usually one inside the anal canal or rectum and the other coming from the external opening to the skin outside and pus will be coming outside. So that is called as a fistula. Fistula has internal opening and external opening or there can be more number of openings. So if it is a complex fistula there will be more number of openings or it will be at a higher level or it will be a recurring one or there will be multiple branches. So these are complex fistula. Treatment of fistula involves , if there is a pus hat has to be drained and allow it to come out and the tract ha s to be managed, whether it has to be removed or laid open or the internal opening has to be closed with stitches or it has to be covered up with mucus membrane to close the internal opening with the sphincter there are multiple methods to close the fistula and most of them are open methods. Other ways doing it as VAAFT or Video Assisted Anal Fistula Treatment where we take the assistance of the video camera we put it into the tract and under vision we can clear all the infected material and using some energy sources we can close the tracks and burn the tracks.
